The Cattle
The Cattle we grow for our beef products are all British breeds including Angus, Charolaise Hereford and Murray Grey. We choose these breeds for their superb eating quality and docility. We source our cattle locally from breeders based in the Widebay Burnett regions. We buy yearling cattle aged between 10-14 months of age and grow them for a minimum of 100 days
(WE DO NOT USE ANY GROWTH PROMOTERS)

What they eat
The one thing we have learnt over the years is that the best eating beef comes from cattle that are not stressed in any way shape or form. When I say stressed I also mean they are not force fed any one single feed source. Our free range feeding method enables the cattle to choose from 3 separate feeding stations which they choose what they want to eat when they want it. Cattle force fed a diet consisting of grains alone will stress the animal and basically makes them sick due to the acid produced in the digestion process. Sick cattle need to be fed medications to keep them alive and sick cattle DON’T produce healthy beef.

The first feeding station consists of fresh barley sprouts unprocessed in anyway, grown purely on water and fresh air (no extra nutrients added) cattle naturally eat grasses, and in the good seasons they grow plenty of meat, bone and fat to sustain them during the dry seasons.

The second feeding station is a good supply of fresh hay; this ensures a good supply roughage which is so important in a balanced diet. We generally feed fresh Barley straw or grass hay.

The third feeding station is the grain bin .The ration is a basic grain mix. The feed is free of contaminates and has NO medication or antibiotics. The cattle choose to eat less than an a third of the grain force fed in some feed lot fed facilities.

There is also the pasture which grows when the seasons are good, our cattle are moved from paddock to paddock every 10-14 days to ensure cattle ticks are kept a minimum and the need for treating against these parasites is minimal.

The Environment in which our cattle are raised
Our Cattle run in a free range environment in 5 -10 acre paddocks on the banks of the Burrum and Gregory Rivers. They are shaded by a good stand of trees and have access to clean fresh drinking water. We deliver the fresh sprouts daily to the herd and we move amongst them calmly keeping them quiet and calm. There is no chasing or major mustering involved when we need to yard them they peacefully follow us into the yards (again no stress) Heat stress can be a major problem in many feed lot facilities but we have never had a problem with this due to the fact we live so close to coast and the sea breezes and not overloading them with grain helps to keep them cool.

The butchering process
This very important part of the process begins with loading and transporting of the cattle to the Abattoir. Our purpose built gooseneck trail is designed to keep bruising to a minimum. With the sides 90% enclosed it again keeps the animal quiet and not stressed. The Abattoir is fully licenced and is a MSA accredited facility, the holding yards are fully shaded and water is all ways available to the animals. The beef is hung using the tender stretching method for 7 – 10 days before processing begins. The processing of all our products is done in a fully accredited butcher shop and the work is carried out by trade qualified butchers.

Each order is packed in meal sized freezer bags and labelled for easy identification in the freezer. Corned beef, Liver and some other cuts are Vac packed to keep them fresh.

The Health benefits
The health benefits of eating any animal fed on fresh natural grasses, pastures or sprouts far out weight those fed on a super high energy grain only diet. The greens found in the plants are highly alkaline and balances out the PH levelling in the rumen (gut) of the cow. We have had samples of meat tested in a university laboratory. The beef returned high levels of vitamin E, omega n-3 and lower level of omega n-6 and most importantly high in Conjugated Linoleic Acid a fatty acid essential for healthy living click here to see report ( copy of report on FB)
